Musical Compass Working

Today I finally built the full “phone DJ compass.”

In Max, I created a full structure with filter, LFO, resonance, and two angle-based triggers (sound only reacts within specific ranges).

Compass data enters using udpreceive, then I use select to define angle thresholds so direction doesn’t trigger everything, only specific zones.

Since I couldn’t find samples I liked, I made a 00s-style breakbeat/jungle loop in Ableton Live and used the compass to modulate it.

I didn’t choose this music just because I like it

breakbeats have clear transients and a dense rhythm layer, which makes filter/LFO changes easier to hear.

They also have a “cutting” and “rotating” feel that matches compass movement well.

Maybe in the future I can expand into multi-direction mapping, acceleration-controlled pitch, or spatialisation (rotation → panning).
