Project Start

For this collaboration, I worked on Pearls Against the Wall, a projection animation project by Cindy, Mariam and Ming from CSM PDP for We See We Move. The project was initially developed through the motifs of pearls and clams, with references to Ophelia, perception and identity. My role as a Sound Arts student was to create the sound design and sonic atmosphere for the work.

At the beginning, I understood the project as more than a short animation. Because it would be shown in a staged projection environment, I had to think about sound in relation to space, rhythm and atmosphere. I started by reading the group information, checking the schedule and identifying the main visual and conceptual materials.

The first stage helped me position myself within the collaboration. I was not making the animation, but the sound still had the potential to shape how the work would feel and move. This made me approach the project less like a traditional soundtrack task and more like an interdisciplinary sound practice.

This starting point was useful because it gave me a clear framework: ocean, pearls, clams, glass, femininity, vulnerability and emotional tension. These became the main ideas I tested through sound.
