The final project title shown in the video is Pearls Against the Wall. Although the project was first discussed through pearls and clams as metaphors, the final title clarified the work’s relationship with pressure, containment and resistance. The final outcome became a projection animation shown in the CSM theatre space.
I documented the final work as it was shown in the theatre. This was important because the project was not only a digital animation file, but a projection work experienced in a physical space. The theatre documentation shows how animation, projection surfaces, set, lighting and sound came together as a final realised outcome.
Seeing the work in the CSM theatre changed how I understood the project. The sound was no longer only connected to a video timeline on my laptop. It became part of a wider spatial and performative environment. This helped me think about sound in relation to projection, space and audience experience.
I also included my final audio file and Ableton session as documentation of my individual contribution. The audio export and Ableton timeline show how the sound was structured through real ocean recordings, synthetic textures, pearl-like details and atmospheric transitions.
Looking back, this project changed how I understand my role as a sound artist. I was not only making atmosphere or effects. My audio helped guide the pacing and emotional structure of the animation. This made the collaboration feel more equal and active.
One limitation was that the visual direction was still developing while I was making the sound. This meant that my first demo had to remain flexible rather than fully resolved. However, this also became useful, because the flexibility allowed the group to respond to the sound and use it as part of their development process.
For my future practice, this project confirmed my interest in sound for projection, moving image, installation and performance. I want to keep developing sound as a way of shaping space, rhythm and perception, rather than simply working as background music.
